Caramelized Banana Oatmeal - Dairy Free, Nut Free Oatmeal

Oatmeal with caramelized bananas and cinnamon. The best, most flavorful oatmeal recipe! This oatmeal with caramelized bananas is simply addictive and for such a showstopper, it’s way easier to make than you might think. It’s also dairy free and can be made gluten free if you use gluten free oats and a gluten free plant based milk alternative.

I make oatmeal with caramelized bananas when I want a little extra something at breakfast time; a breakfast that feels like a special treat. I love the combination of bananas, cinnamon, and oats. It’s a beautiful flavor profile. I also like my oatmeal to have a dash of saltiness to balance out the sweetness of the maple syrup and bananas.

Ingredients for Caramelized Banana Oatmeal - Dairy Free, Nut Free Oatmeal

  • 1 cup rolled oats or quick oats

  • 1 ½ cups your choice of plant based milk alternative

  • a pinch of salt (about 1/8 tsp)

  • ½ tsp pure vanilla extract

  • 1 tbsp. maple syrup

  • 1 not fully ripe banana

  • 1 tbsp. of a neutral oil for sauteing

  • Ground cinnamon to taste

  • 1 heaping tbsp. of Sunbutter

How to make Caramelized Banana Oatmeal - Dairy Free, Nut Free Oatmeal

  1. Add the oats, milk alternative, salt, vanilla, and maple syrup to a small pot and stir well over medium heat until the mixture is hot throughout and reaches your desired level of thickness. Set aside while you prepare the bananas.

  2. Slice the peeled banana into ½ inch thick rounds. Heat the oil in a non-stick pan over medium heat. Fry the bananas until they are browned on one side, then flip over and brown the other side. Watch them closely as they will caramelize quickly once they come up to temperature. Sprinkle with cinnamon.

  3. Pour the oatmeal into a bowl and top with the caramelized bananas and Sunbutter.
