Are you familiar with kombucha? It’s a fermented drink made from a blend of teas, mixed with fruit juices, herbs, and spices. Because of the fermentation process it contains probiotic cultures which are said to be good for your gut health. I have been drinking kombucha ever since a Whole Foods opened near my family home during university. Combined with my intermittent fasting routine, the state of my gut health has felt so much better.
Since I don’t consume any common fermented dairy products (such as yogurt, kefir, or cheese) I’ve always struggled to manage my gut health. As a woman this has at times led to problems with yeast and candida. Finding kombucha was a total godsend for me. Paired with my regular intake of sauerkraut, I have been able to get probiotics into my diet regularly. Aside from drinking kombucha straight from the bottle, I sometimes add it to smoothies or bake it into bread. I buy GT’s kombucha; it’s allergy safe for me, and has some of the most delicious flavors! I’m fortunate that it’s also very accessible in my area; 5 grocery and convenience stores within a 1 km radius of my home carry it.
This recipe was inspired by beautiful pastel colours. Instead of blending everything together at once, I blend the ingredients and top it up with orange juice so that it creates a pastel gradient effect. Add it to your breakfast lineup, or as a midday snack.
Ingredients
4 strawberries
1 ripe banana
1 tbsp. lemon juice
1/2 cup kombucha - GT’s Trilogy
1/2 cup orange juice
several mint leaves
Blend the berries, banana, lemon, and kombucha. Pour into 2 juice glasses, then top up each one with orange juice so that the colours swirl together. Serve it nice and cold.
